Sure, we are no where near the darker blue shirts worn by Shaun Goater, Ali Benarbia and co in the late 1990's and early 2000's. The fact is though fans of all clubs pay a lot of money for these shirts and it would be nice to feel a little effort has been put in to designs.
It seems that Nike, and it is hard to argue when you look at other teams who sport Nike shirts, use the same template for every side. In fact you can imagine the board meetings in Oregon, where the company is based, to be quite brief.
"Badge on one side, Nike logo on the other, sponsor underneath, their traditional color and off you go".
How about Barca?? "Badge on one side, Nike logo on the other, sponsor underneath, their traditional color and off you go!"
And PSG? Badge on one side...................................
The 2018-19 season though will be the last as the contract with Nike runs down. An announcement made recently is that PUMA will now be putting their name on City shirts, in a £50 million deal.
The deal will cover all sides within the City Football Group, with the exception of New York City FC in America. Due to the contract MLS has, every side gets their shirts from Adidas. So Girona FC in Spain, Melbourne City FC in Australia along with Yokohama F Marinos and CA Torque will all change in 2019.
The only question is will our first PUMA shirt have the golden numbers on the back? Only time will tell.
